Social Media Tips

When we talk about social media we are talking about things like Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Google Plus and things like that.  These are places online where you can interact with others.

There is a lot of talk about using social media for your business which is a great idea, but you need to know some little tips to keep you on the right track.

  • Hang out with friends.  Social media is meant to be social.  Interact with others, comment on thier posts.  Just imagine it like hanging out with friends and act like you would in person.
  • Have a strategy.  Don’t just go and post the same things on all your sites.  Make it a variety, let it show the world who you are.  Only when people know you will they feel comfortable buying from you.
  • Be personal, but not too personal.  I once saw a teen who posted when he was going to, er…uh.. the potty for a number two.  That is too personal.  To be personal, share your hobbies or interesting articles you read.  When someone gets to know you and connects with you, they will visit your web site and you can have a customer for life.
  • Don’t try to sell, sell, sell.  I just unfollowed a person because everyone of her tweets involved a product she wanted you to buy.  No one likes a sales pitch all the time.
  • Let people find you.  If you are posting interesting things, you will be found.  Don’t you like to do things on your own terms?
  • Grow organically.  That means you should not expect to have a million views on your first post.  Remember, it is like meeting friends, you don’t meet one million people at once, you meet them one at a time.
  • Think outside the box.  Your headline tells it all.  You only have 140 characters (on some sites) to make an impression.  Your title will tell someone if they want to actually read your site or not.

There are a bunch more tips I could throw out, just have fun with it.  Use social media to be a friend. If you did not read our previous post, there are some helpful things about developing a social media strategy with a link to a fun strategy guide and free training videos.  You can see it here.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction.  Make social happen!
